Greg Norris, President

Greg Norris founded and directs Sylvatica. His vision for Sylvatica is to provide the tools needed for a sustainable world. He is respected worldwide for his innovations in quantifying and understanding sustainability. Greg is a Program Manager for the United Nations’ Environment Program’s (UNEP) global Life Cycle Initiative, directing the Program on Life Cycle Inventory Analysis. He teaches graduate courses on LCA and Industrial Ecology at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), where he advises graduate students from HSPH and visiting research fellows from abroad. He consults on LCA and sustainable consumption to UNEP, to Federal and state agencies in the US, and to the private and non-profit sectors. Greg is the founder and executive director of New Earth, a global foundation for grass-roots sustainable development (www.newearth.info). Greg has developed several software tools to assist analysis and decision-making related to Life Cycle Assessment and sustainable enterprise. Recent research integrates socio-economic pathways to human health within the LCA framework and develops a human need-based approach to sustainable consumption analysis. He is an Adjunct Research Professor at the Complex Systems Research Center, University of New Hampshire; he is a Program Associate in the Center for Hazardous Substance Research at Kansas State University, and is an editor of the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment.

Pascal Lesage, Consultant

Based in Montreal, Canada, Pascal Lesage joined the Sylvatica team in 2007. His experience lies mostly in Life Cycle Assessment, having worked as a research officer at the CIRAIG (Interuniversity Research Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes and Services) from 2005 to 2007. He holds a BS in civil engineering, where he mostly focused on end-of-pipe solutions to environmental problems. It is during his graduate studies that his vision concerning the responsibility of engineers towards society and the environment became much broader. He is well versed in eco-efficiency, design for environment, industrial ecology and, most of all, LCA. His Ph.D., completed in 2005, compared attributional and consequential LCA models for contaminated urban brownfield management options.

Current Professional Positions/Affiliations

Consultant, Sylvatica, Montreal office (as of June 2007)

Yurika Nishioka, Consultant

Yurika Nishioka provides Sylvatica with expert LCI research and espertise in a number of areas with high potential environmental impact. Through a grant from an association of US manufacturers, she is advancing her research on the potential impacts of energy-saving technologies; she is expanding the modeling and results to address the impacts of energy conservation measures on greenhouse gas emissions, taking into account the full life cycle (economy-wide) industrial interactions, using a dynamic economic/emissions modeling framework. Her current research also includes an integrated life-cycle assessment and risk assessment of PVC and alternative building materials and an investigation of phthalate concentrations and sources in homes. She works as a TA at both Harvard and MIT for graduate-level courses. Yurika received her Ph.D. from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2004. Her research focused on applying and combining quantitative models in the following domains: energy consumption in the industrial, commercial, and residential sectors; inter-linkages of industrial sectors using life cycle assessment methods, with process-based models as well as economic input/output models; pollution dispersion modeling, and epidemiological models to estimate health impacts of pollution exposures.

Current Professional Positions/Affiliations

Consultant, Sylvatica (since 2005)
Research Fellow, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA (since 2004)

Lise Laurin, Affiliated Consultant

Lise Laurin began supporting Greg in his marketing and business devlopment efforts in 1999. This cooperative effort was the beginning of Lise's shift in focus toward supporting sustainability in industry. She founded EarthShift in 2000 to provide tools that could help change the way businesses value natural resources. In 2003, Lise began working directly with Greg to provide Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Total Cost Assessment (TCA) consulting. Prior to EarthShift, Lise consulted with high tech and environmental organizations, providing market research and marketing strategy. Through her work in product marketing and process engineering, Lise has an excellent grasp of the corporate priorities within any decision-making process,as well as the process of new product devleopment. Lise draws on 20 years experience in the semiconductor and electronics industries. She began her professional life as a process engineer at Intel. She holds a BS in Physics from Yale University.
